in john bunyan's novel, pilgrim's progress, the slough of despond is a boggy, mire-like swamp where a sinner encounters all of the doubts, fears, and temptations of their sins. the contemporary meaning of the slough of despond is a state of extreme depression or despondency. this was how i felt about my life when i had made this song.
